Trump moves to restore failed United States policy on Cuba

A corresponding sentiment is attributed to one of Trump's predecessors, Theodore Roosevelt: "Americans learn only from catastrophe and not from experience".

While Havana will not respond until the United States measures are officially implemented, Rodriguez said that what Trump announced looks to hurt U.S. businesses, taxpayers and citizens, as well as the very Cuban people he supposedly seeks to champion.

Marco Rubio, who helped craft the new policy, continues to sell it, with an op/ed in the Miami Herald, co-authored by Sen. Now, some Americans see Cuba as a tourist destination. The goal of the regulations is to ensure the money spent goes straight to the Cuban people not the Cuban government.

The policy change allowed the president to claim credit for taking a tough stand while leaving in place numerous changes his predecessor had made, which polls have shown are broadly supported, including by most Republicans.

By acceding to the United States presidency, billionaire Donald Trump had to yield the reins of his empire, but it appears that his revenues from his Florida private club and book sales have swelled.

How strictly the USA will enforce the restrictions will depend on the regulations federal agencies write - and whether the Cuban government tries to work around them.

Trump's vow to keep the broader decades-old US economic embargo on Cuba firmly in place drew criticism from some USA farmers, especially growers of corn, soybeans and rice.

But, facing pressure from USA businesses and even some fellow Republicans to avoid turning back the clock completely in relations with Cuba, the president chose to leave intact some of his Democratic predecessor's steps toward normalization. But the U.S. government preventing Americans from traveling and spending their own money wherever they wish is itself a violation of basic human rights.

"When Cuba is ready to take concrete steps to these ends, we will be ready, willing, and able to come to the table to negotiate that much better deal for Cubans, for Americans", Trump said.

My opinion: Trump's limited reversal of Obama's opening to Cuba is political theater with very little real impact.

Under Trump's order, the Treasury and Commerce departments will be given 30 days to begin writing new regulations, which will not take effect until they are complete. "He could at least try to make a fake excuse a little more believable".

Worldwide human rights groups say, however, that renewed US efforts to isolate the island could worsen the situation by empowering Cuban hard-liners. Saudi Arabia, while a key United States ally in the Middle East, is a well-known violator of human rights.

The next Summit of the Americas, slated for 2018, could present President Trump with the opportunity to seek partners in pursuing his agenda in the region, but his shift in Cuban policy will likely hinder cooperation and earn him a far less positive reception than Obama received at the last Summit. The decision released the U.S. Coast Guard to deal with drug smuggling via the open seas with its limited resources and vast responsibilities.

The stunning property, in a renovated Belle Epoque mall, opened this month billing itself as Cuba's first luxury hotel, with a vast spa, rooftop terrace and cigar lounge. In 2016, the U.S. exported over $245 million dollars - measured on a nominal basis - worth of goods and services to Cuba and imported nothing, according to the U.S. Census Bureau on Foreign Trade.
