'Cars 3' laps the competition at the box office

Disney's "Cars 3" raced to the top of the North American box office over the weekend, knocking "Wonder Woman" into second place, according to final figures released Monday.

The Cars films are far from Disney and Pixar's highest earners, but Cars 3 is another example that even a decent opening for the duo is a victory in the big picture. The first two "Cars" movies combined have made more than $435 million in the USA and $1 billion globally.

Pixar's latest movie, "Cars 3", may have won the weekend box office, but that was hardly the most interesting thing that went down at the multiplex the last couple of days. Wonder Woman only dropped 30% over its third weekend in release and has now rung up an impressive $275 million domestically.

The movie is the directorial venture of Brian Fee, who worked as a storyboard artist on Cars and Cars 2, as well as Ratatouille and Wall-E. "In 2015, Jurassic World" raked in $106.6 million in its second weekend. On Friday, Wonder Woman soared past the $500 million mark globally. The longtime-coming Tupac biopic "All Eyez on Me" earned $27.1 million to take third place on the charts. Raunchy comedy "Rough Night" opened in seventh place at $8.1 million, behind sixth place "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", which brought in $8.5 million. Pinkett-Smith slammed the movie as "deeply hurtful".

47 Meters Down is a 2017 British survival horror film directed by Johannes Roberts, written by Roberts and Ernest Riera and starring Mandy Moore, Claire Holt, Chris J. Johnson, Yani Gellman, Santiago Segura and Matthew Modine.

Tom Cruise's "The Mummy" will follow at the fourth spot for the weekend with an estimated $14 million for a domestic total of $56 million-plus through Sunday.
