Korea may get North to co-host Olympic ski events

The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (POCOG) announced that K-pop sensation Taeyang is the latest well-known Korean artist to become an honorary ambassador for the 2018 Winter Games.

According to the reports, despite longstanding hostile relations between the neighboring countries, Jong-hwan believes co-hosting the Olympics can help foster peace in the Korean Peninsula.

In just a couple of months, South Korea will host the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, about 40 miles from the demilitarized zone.

Do plans to discuss the matter with Jang and IOC President Thomas Bach, both of whom are scheduled to visit South Korea later this month to attend the closing ceremony of an global Taekwondo competition. The championships, which will feature a performance by the North Korean taekwondo demonstration team, mark the first sports exchange between the Koreas since the liberal Moon took office in May.

It has also been suggested the two nations form an inter-Korean women's ice hockey team to compete in the Games.

Per the Guardian, no North Korean athletes have qualified for the 2018 Games yet.

The news comes amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, following the North Korean regime's missile tests, as well as the death of Otto Warmbier, a USA student who suffered severe neurological trauma while serving part of a 15-year sentence for stealing a political banner.

A liberal candidate from the Democratic Party, Moon has pledged greater dialogue with North Korea in a bid to reduce tensions. US officials arranged for his release last week, but Warmbier arrived home in OH in a coma-like state with severe brain damage.
