Bottas leads FP3 as Vettel, Verstappen hit trouble

Kimi Raikkonen was more than one second behind Hamilton, qualifying third ahead of his Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel.

The qualifying session will also be held today as part of the 2017 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas had been quickest in the final Q3 session until Hamilton's late intervention.

Bottas led qualifying and set an even quicker time on his final lap, only for Hamilton to beat him by almost half a second.

"Valtteri was on a great lap as well, so when I came across the line and saw that I had pole, it was such a good feeling".

A lightning fast Hamilton was stuck behind Bottas and Vettel was down in 6th when a red flag was thrown after Daniel Ricciardo lost the back of his Red Bull with three and a half minutes to go.

The three-time champion Austrian, who is Mercedes' non-executive chairman, also praised the team for their work in turning around a auto that had struggled on Friday, when Hamilton was 10th, into the fastest just 24 hours later.

"It's been hard with the tires to switch them on, it's been a struggle", Räikkönen said, who was more than a second behind Hamilton's pole time.

"My first run in Q3 was actually really good, but I was a bit greedy into the last corner, locked up and cost myself time".

Lewis Hamilton moved ahead of Ayrton Senna in career poles Saturday.

The tyres were struggling to find grip on the streets of Azerbaijan again, with numerous drivers, like Hamilton and Vettel locking brakes and losing time.

This year sees our second visit to the Baku City Circuit, and it's a track that divides opinions.

"The result is okay but I'm not entirely happy", the four-times Formula One champion said.

Force India duo Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon finished sixth and seventh respectively.

Both McLarens will start from the rear of the field on Sunday thanks to multiple grid penalties for use of additional Honda power unit elements, while Sainz will lose three grid spots for causing a collision last time out in Canada.

The pack were poised ready to get back out on track, with Verstappen hoping to get two laps in when the clock restarted, and instructed by his team to defend his position if the Mercedes cars tried to get past him.

Fernando Alonso, already hit with a 40-point grid penalty, failed to advance past Q1 for the first time this season, while Jolyon Palmer did not take part in qualifying after a fire in his auto during Saturday morning's practice.
