Seattle police: No choice but lethal force in fatal shooting

Whitcomb also told GeekWire that he was not directed by Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole or Mayor Ed Murray's office to end outreach with Twitch.

While the effort likely meant to make the city's officers more available to the Seattle residents, it backfired when its public affairs director Sgt. Sean Whitcomb used Twitch to address questions surrounding the death of Lyles, a pregnant woman shot and killed by officers in her home after reporting a burglary.

Family described Charleena Lyles as loving to sing and dance, adoring her four kids, and always smiling, even when facing obstacles. It seems that Merrick Bobb, the federal monitor overseeing Seattle police reforms, needs to reopen his investigation. "I grew up in a family of police officers and this is an embarrassment to the profession my grandfather and my dad chose".

The officers responded to the apartment on June 18 after Lyles reported a burglary.

Officers fired their weapons after yelling "Get back" several times.

On Sunday, shortly before 9 a.m., Lyles called 911 to report a break-in and told the operator that her door was open and that "there's stuff missing", from her home.

When the battery for Officer Jason Anderson's Taser finally died about two weeks before the deadly encounter with Charleena Lyles, he stashed the busted tool inside his locker and failed to have the battery replaced, according to transcripts through the Seattle Police Department's Force Investigation Team on Friday. "They ended up coming in and killing her". She had been arrested and charged with obstruction of a public officer and harassment of a law enforcement officer on June 5. The surveillance video files from the apartment hallway do not show anyone other than Lyles entering her apartment.

Anderson, who joined the department in 2015, said he drew his pistol, asked for fast backup on his radio and, along with McNew, told Lyles to "get back". Shots were heard in the audio. Although the Seattle Police has released video and audio from the shooting just days after the incident, Lyles' criminal history was revealed hours after she was gunned down.

But he said that he wouldn't have used it in that situation because he was trained to use lethal force when being attacked by someone with a knife.

McNew and Anderson are now on paid administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation.
