First Disneyland map sells for £555000

It was made for Roy Disney, Walt's brother, to bring to NY as a main presentation piece in order to get the funding needed to build the theme park.

The map that started it all - the original 1953 drawing used to persuade investors to fund theme park Disneyland - has sold at auction for $708,000.

The hand-coloured map was drawn in two days with input from Disney and artist Herb Ryman. Another tweak in the real model is the fairy tale castle at the centre of the park, which is shown to be at the corner on the old map. It's a record for a Disney map and among the most expensive Disneyland items ever sold on the open market.

Numerous ideas shown on the map became realities when Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California, in 1955. The map shows areas like Lilliputian Land that never saw the light of the day.

The map was later given to production assistant Grenade Curran, who kept it safe for over 60 years.

While 700k is a lot of money to blow, whoever bought the map, which was first acquired from a Disney employee by collector Ron Clark 40 years ago, got a good deal, as the auctioneers were hoping it would fetch around $900,000. The park has had a footfall of 650 million visitors in its long history and was reported the third most-visited theme park in the world, according to BBC.
