'Transformers: The Last Knight' debuts to a franchise low

The Last Knight took in $196.2 million from 41 markets, which is on par with Transformers: Age of Extinction, with China, Indonesia, Ukraine and Turkey all having the biggest ever openings in the Transformers franchise.

Deadline estimated that "Legend of the Sword's" marketing campaign, for example, cost around $135 million, and as much as $150 million was spent promoting "The Lone Ranger", according to Variety.

The box office performance of Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction, though, offers some hope for The Last Knight.

Universal/Illumination Entertainment's Despicable Me 3 fetched $3.5 million in its second weekend at 293 cinemas, dropping by 40 per cent.

"Transformers: The Last Knight", the fifth installment in the blockbuster franchise from Michael Bay, may have topped the weekend, but all the robot-smashing has gotten a bit rusty at the box office.

Warner Bros. Pictures' "Wonder Woman" is still going strong, and finished at number-three overall on the domestic charts, the film's $25M weekend raises the film's four-week domestic total to over $318M. That's a grand total of $258 million for the weekend, and a reminder that the dunder-headed dialogue and nonsensical narratives of these Transformers flicks matter naught; that stuff doesn't translate anyway.

The next largest territory is Korea, where the movie should gross $13 million from 1,721 locations. So basically things are not looking well for Transformers: The Last Knight, which is now pretty much guaranteed to become the first installment in the series to not top $200 million in the US.

Wonder Woman holds on to second place at the USA box office during its fourth weekend in cinemas, raking in a total of over $318 million (GBP248.5 million). The fifth film in the franchise now sits at $160 million domestically and $677 million worldwide.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", $5.2 million ($8.3 million international).

With $98.8 million in 10 days Cars 3 is $18.3 and $18.4 million behind Cars and Cars 2 at the same point in their respective box office runs. The ensemble film is now sitting at $16.6 million domestically and $24.2 million worldwide. That puts it on course for around as $390 million and a money maker on a $200 million budget.

True, most movies would kill for an opening weekend estimated at $45.3 million, or a five-day total (the movie opened Wednesday) estimated at $69.0 million. Upcoming markets for the film include France (June 28), Brazil (July 20), Mexico (July 21), Japan (August 4) and Spain (August 4).

Two big films reported the exact same weekend estimate and tied for second place with finals counted on Monday set to determine the final order.
