Tour de France 2017 Stage 5 Preview

President of the race commission Philippe Marien said: We've made a decision to disqualify Peter Sagan from the Tour de France 2017 as he endangered some of his colleagues seriously in the final metres of the sprint which happened in Vittel.

He cited Article 12 of the International Cycling Union (UCI) rules, which states that any rider making a wilful obstruction "against one of the 1st 10 riders placed" faces elimination. Cavendish, victor of the second-most Tour de France stages in history, tried to pass Stage 3 victor Sagan, but instead, he fell into a barrier, suffering what appeared to be a shoulder injury, and is likely out of this year's Tour.

At the finish line, Sagan did wait to apologize to Cavendish but the Briton had already been taken to hospital for X-rays.

"Like I said, I get on with Peter, a crash is a crash, but I'd like to know about the elbow".

What likely prompted the race organisers decision was they way in which Sagan apparently pushed with his elbow upon contacting Cavendish. "I'm not a fan of him putting his elbow in me like that", Cavendish said. Marcel Kittel, Arnaud Démare, André Greipel, Peter Sagan - obviously, Mark Cavendish, Alexander Kristoff and Dylan Groenewegen will all be hoping to get involved on the slightly uphill, but not too steep, finish. The crash left Cavendish needing treatment for his injuries and further examinations in a hospital.

The Manxman fell heavily after taking a nudge from world champion Peter Sagan in the final 100 metres in Vittel. "He was close to losing his balance so he put out his arm to stop himself from falling down", the bodyguard said.

Sagan and Cavendish came together during the sprint for the Stage 4 win, with the Manx Missile trying to create space near the barriers. "Half the peloton is racing not to lose time, half the peloton is aiming for the stage". The Quick-Step Floors rider's brilliant effort in Longwy - which returned in the Tour de France after a 35-year hiatus - saw him take a total of six seconds on all the other race favourites, a welcomed bonus that helped him move up to 15th place in the overall rankings.

"I hit the deck but I'm fine", Thomas said. "I didn't know Mark was behind me". In 2012, it was Chris Froome who took the win in his big coming-out party as a potential Tour contender, as teammate Bradley Wiggins went into the overall lead.

The 27-year-old Slovak, who rides for Bora-Hansgrohe, powered over the line in front of Australia's Michael Matthews, with Ireland's Dan Martin third.
