Gulf states dismiss Qatar's response to list of demands

"We find it did not provide a basis for Qatar to retreat from its policies", Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said, reading out a joint statement after the meeting.

Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, tweeted on Thursday: "For any real discussion with Doha to gain traction, it has to be responsible for past actions and recognise the necessity of changing course".

He described Doha's response as a "position that reflects a failure to realise the gravity of the situation" and hoped that "wisdom will prevail and Qatar will eventually make the right decisions".

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday dismissed calls for closure of the Turkish military base and said the list of Arab demands amounted to an unlawful intervention against Qatari sovereignty.

The blockade has disrupted imports of food and other materials into Qatar and caused many foreign banks to scale back their business with the country.

Trump called on all parties "to negotiate constructively to resolve the dispute" and reiterated the need for all countries to follow through on commitments to halt terrorist financing and "discredit extremist ideology", the White House said.

As The Two-Way reported, on June 22 the countries gave Qatar 10 days to comply with a list of demands including shutting down the Doha-based Al-Jazeera news network, severing ties with "terrorist organizations" and cutting ties with Iran.

"To defeat terrorism, we must confront extremism, we must confront hate speech, we must confront the harboring and sheltering of extremists and terrorists, and funding them", Sheikh Abdullah said. "We remain loyal to our agreement with Qatar and we will see it through until the end".

The foreign ministers said they will meet again in the Bahraini capital Manama, specifying neither a date nor the next steps the four countries are expected to take.

Though Qatar Airways' routes over its neighbors have been closed, along with the country's sole land border with Saudi Arabia, Doha has been able to import food and goods from other countries.

The stand-off has plunged Qatar into crisis, sending the stock market tumbling and closing down its airspace.

His Qatari counterpart wondered why "Qatar's independence" poses "such a threat" to Saudi Arabia and its allies as he accused them of "intellectual terrorism". Kattouf said the dispute is unlikely to affect the American economy barring further developments.
