Microsoft to Cut Thousands of Sales Jobs

The cuts amount to less than 10 percent of its total sales force, Microsoft said, adding that around three-quarters of affected employees reside outside of the US.

Microsoft is in the process of notifying employees that their jobs are "under consideration", or that their positions will be eliminated, the spokesman said.

"Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis", the spokesperson said. Microsoft Azure's revenue grew 93 percent in the first quarter of 2017, compared to AWS' 43 percent growth.

Microsoft Corporation shares were trading at $68.59 per share on Thursday morning, down $0.49 (-0.71%).

These changes point to a goal of focusing more intently on Microsoft's growing cloud computing business. However, there has been no number attached to how many could be released during this shift, and today's chatter on Blind has yet to crystallize the potential.

CNBC reported that layoffs would cut up to 3,000 employees.

Microsoft's recently rumored restructuring is said to be underway according to a report from Business Insider, who used references to several anonymous chats found on the app Blind.

The company has been beefing up its cloud software and services as it tries to unseat the sector's top provider Amazon Web Services (AWS). It allows companies to do everything from hosting websites and email to streaming favorite videos and delivering on-demand software.

Today's announcement comes just days before Microsoft's Inspire partner conference, where the company is expected to announce new initiatives aimed at the businesses that resell and build on top of its products.

Disappointing sales of Microsoft's Surface computer line, which has plunged 26 per cent and dragging down PC sales by 7 per cent, have undercut fiscal third quarter results, announced in April. Previous year alone, more than 7500 people were let go by Microsoft.
