Cirstea: "What if Mattek-Sands' injury had been a heart attack?"

A non-contact injury to her right knee left American Bethanie Mattek-Sands writhing in pain during the second round of Wimbledon on Thursday. "I said, I am here, you are strong, you can do this". Finally, while being stretchered out she said, "It hurts, it hurts so much".

Mattek-Sands isn't the only one who had reasons to be displeased with the courts.

"She kept saying, Sorana help me, Sorana help me, Sorana help me", Cirstea told reporters after the match, according to the WTA.

She won her first set against Cirstea 6-4 and lost the second in a tie-breaker. "I said, I'm here, I'm here, I'm here".

The announcers and those in attendance didn't appear to realize how serious the injury was - until Mattek-Sands started screaming for help with frightening urgency.

When Safarova learned what happened, she was visibly distraught.

"It's just awful what happened, obviously I'm very sad for her", Safarova said, speaking barely above a whisper after losing her singles match. "The player was then transferred directly into an ambulance and taken under emergency conditions to a hospital". As she did so, however, her knee buckled beneath her and she fell to the grass turf, screaming in pain.

Paramedics gave her lengthy treatment including oxygen, but her screams could still be heard on nearby courts.

Mattek-Sands and Safarova are the reigning doubles champions in three of the four majors and they were vying for a non-calendar-year Grand Slam at Wimbledon. "I'm not a doctor but you could see that her kneecap was in a very weird position", she said.

"I called for help, but no one was coming", Cirstea said.

Cristea later questioned the length of time it took for Mattek-Sands to be put on a stretcher and taken off Court 17 and to hospital for surgery. I wished I could have done more.
