Top Government Watchdog Who Butted Heads With Trump Announces Abrupt Resignation

A top USA ethics official, who has clashed repeatedly with the Trump administration, announced his resignation on Thursday.

Walter Shaub Jr., director of the Office of Government Ethics, said he'll resign later this month.

Sen. Elizabeth WarrenElizabeth WarrenWarren: Ethics director's resignation "deeply unnerving" Trump winning against Dems in 2020 merchandise sales Feinstein downplays talk of Kamala Harris White House bid: "She just got here" MORE (D-Mass.) on Thursday called the resignation of the Office of Government Ethics Director's Walter Shaub "deeply unnerving".

The office is charged with ensuring members of the executive branch follow federal ethics laws and regulations.

In March, Shaub criticized the White House for not properly penalizing White House adviser Kellyanne Conway for encouraging Americans to purchase Ivanka Trump's products during a television interview. In explaining his decision to take on this new role, Shaub explained: "It has become clear to me that we need improvements to the existing ethics program". Shaub did not elaborate further on the problems he had at the OGE, but he did mention wanting greater freedom to pursue reform.

He said Trump's plan to retain financial interests in the Trump Organization while handing over leadership to his adult sons and a senior executive "doesn't meet the standards" of Trump's own Cabinet nominees and four decades of previous presidents.

Shaub's office was founded in the wake of Watergate, and oversees 4,500 employees who work on ethics-related issues across the government.

Shaub's agency is charged with enforcing the often murky ethics laws in the era of Trump. President Barack Obama named him to the post, which requires Senate confirmation, in January 2013 after Shaub had worked in the office for almost a decade. "The President will be nominating a successor in short order". "We can't risk creating the perception that government officials will use their positions for personal profit".

Shaub took to Twitter to announce his resignation, attaching a photo of his resignation letter.

In a statement, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., promised Democrats would closely scrutinize Trump's selection to replace Shaub.

Shaub had clashed with the new White House since before Trump's inauguration. Chaffetz rebuked Shaub in a January letter for making public statements about Trump's finances.

His agency traded paper with White House lawyers and would-be staff hires over the terms under which they could come work for the administration.
