JD(U) holds Congress responsible for unrest in Kashmir

His killing by Indian police forces caused months of unrest in the valley which is at the heart of the territorial dispute between India and Pakistan.

"The alert is not only for unlawful assembly of people and rallies but also for militant strikes", he said.

In Jammu and Kashmir, normal life in the valley was paralysed due to curfew in three towns including Tral in Pulwama district and imposition of restrictions on the movement of people in other areas of the valley today.

Amid apprehensions of escalation in violence against the backdrop of the first death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani on Saturday and its impact on the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting to review the security scenario in Jammu & Kashmir.

The official said curfew had also been imposed in Shopian town of south Kashmir and Trehgam in north Kashmir's Kupwara district.

Meanwhile, Police has asked the internet service providers to block all social media sites or shut down their services in Kashmir from 10 pm tonight till further orders in view of the Hurriyat programme.

The joint resistance leadership led by Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik had called for shutdown and protest marches to pay tributes to Burhan, who was killed by government forces in an encounter at Kokernag area of Anantnag on July 8 a year ago. He had taken over the anti-India terror operations of HM after Burhan Wani was killed.

While Indian authorities in Kashmir labelled him an extremist, his supporters called him a rebel leader.

Disputed Kashmir has seen an explosion of protests against Indian rule since government forces shot and killed militant Burhan Wani a year ago. At least 15 people were reported injured in the clashes. The separatists' criticised the security forces, accusing them of using excessive force.

A security alert has been enforced across the Kashmir Valley, with some preventive arrests made ahead of Saturday's anniversary, police inspector general Muneer Ahmad Khan said. Burhan was among the new wave of tech-savy militants who used to leverage social media to recruit and influence Kashmiri youth.

Also on Sunday, Pakistan released 78 Indian fishermen in the southern port city of Karachi. He reiterated Pakistan's moral and diplomatic support to Kashmiris in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) and called upon the global community to honour its commitment for early resolution of the issue.
