George Pell Arrives Back In Australia

Pope Francis" chief financial adviser, Cardinal George Pell has arrived Sydney in his native Australia to face charges of multiple counts of "historical sexual offences'.

Australia's Victoria police have yet to release a list of charges against the 76-year-old cardinal and have not disclosed any information about alleged victims. "News of these charges strengthens my resolve and court proceedings now offer me an opportunity to clear my name", Pell said at his news conference in Rome last month.

He has been granted a leave of absence by Pope Francis.

In October previous year, Australian police said they interviewed Pell in Rome in relation to allegations of sexual assault.

Pell was spotted during a stopover in Singapore on the weekend and arrived in Sydney this morning.

Thomas Doyle, a former Catholic priest and a columnist for the National Catholic Reporter, told NPR last week that before these allegations, Pell had already been criticized for his treatment of victims of clerical sex abuse.

Pell told an Australian government inquiry into institutional child abuse that the Church had made "enormous mistakes" and "catastrophic" choices by refusing to believe abused children, shuffling abusive priests from parish to parish and over-relying on counselling of priests to solve the problem. He will face a Melbourne court on the 26th of July on account of multiple sex charges. In 2014, the commission said Catholic orders in Australia had paid tens of millions of Australian dollars in legal fees and settlements on behalf of priests accused of sexual abuse. "They are false. The whole idea of sexual abuse is abhorrent to me", he said in an address to media in Rome the day he was charged.

"Cardinal George Pell has been informed of the decision and action of Victoria Police", a statement from the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney read at the time.
