Microsoft's new plan to bring broadband to everyone in the US

Microsoft wants to improve rural broadband access by using TV white spaces spectrum, and eliminate the gap across the United States over the next five years.

Microsoft's new Rural Airband Initiative will invest in partnerships with telecom companies with the goal of bringing broadband connectivity to 2 million people in rural America by 2022.

The broadcast spectrum that allowed people in isolated rural areas to watch television long before cable and satellite services could also provide underserved parts of the US with access to broadband Internet service, according to Microsoft. He says the powerful bandwidth will allow wireless signals to travel over hills and through buildings and trees. It notes that "white spaces" are not available everywhere and would require the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to set aside more spectrum for that use. Microsoft made it clear that they are not planning to enter the network business ourselves or even to profit directly from these projects.

Microsoft proposes to provide the technology and the cash and will recoup its investment by collecting a share of future service revenue. Currently, devices capable of using white space connections are rare and expensive.

The company notes that 5 million people now live without access to the Internet. But the company did not say how much the Rural Airband Initiative would cost or how much upfront money it would be contributing. Microsoft envisions the project as a nationwide catalyst to bring online the estimated 34 million Americans who don't have affordable access to the Web. There, the tech company partnered with Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities and the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission. And though there's still some work to be done with things like ensuring that specific white space bands are available in all markets, the hope is that Microsoft's initial plan will spur other companies and the public sector to get involved as well. The chance to create a new addressable market with around 24 million potential customers in the U.S.is a decent carrot to enlist the help of regional ISPs.

The FCC should help in improved data collection regarding rural broadband coverage by accelerating its work to collect and report publicly on the state of broadband coverage in rural counties, thereby aiding policy makers and the private sector in making targeted investments. Lastly, Microsoft plans to invest in digital skills training for people in rural communities as well.
