NASA releases closest photos yet of Jupiter's Great Red Spot

Around 500 miles above Jupiter's visible cloud tops in the red spot - which is three times wider than Earth - the temperature was around 1500 degrees celsius.

According to NASA, the Great Red Spot's winds peak at approximately 400 miles per hour and have been swirling for more than 150 years.

Juno reached perijove - the point at which an orbit comes closest to Jupiter's center - on July 10.

The new images come from the probe's sixth close flyby of the planet while collecting data (it did not collect data during its first flyby).

Early science results from NASA's Juno mission portray the largest planet in our solar system as a turbulent world, with an intriguingly complex interior structure, energetic polar aurora, and huge polar cyclones. Now, data and stunning images are streaming back to NASA, where scientists are processing the information as quickly as they can.

"For hundreds of years scientists have been observing, wondering and theorizing about Jupiter's Great Red Spot", Scott Bolton, Juno principal investigator, said in a NASA news release.

Juno's mission is to understand how Jupiter formed and how it influenced the development of the rest of the solar system. The probe's next close encounter will take place on September 1.
