Seven Hindu pilgrims killed in militant attack in Indian Kashmir

Seven Amarnath pilgrims were killed and 19 others were injured in a terrorist attack in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Monday night.

"This was when the word spread that there was a Yatra bus and terrorists targeted it at Batingu, around 12 kms from the point of breakdown", said home ministry officials giving details of a report sent from the Jammu and Kashmir police.

Earlier, State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert had expressed concern over the terror attack. "These were civilians, they were killed as they were exercising their right to worship, and that is in large part what makes it reprehensible".

"We are too anxious about the United Nations will say and the sanctions that our allies will impose", this person added.

"Despite the attack on Monday, the pilgrims insisted that the Yatra should not be suspended even for a day, and it should continue", Singh said.

When police retaliated, the terrorists fired indiscriminately, and a bus full of pilgrims returning from Amarnath was caught in the crossfire, according to the police. "Religion is a fundamental right and human right #AmarnathYatra #ReligiousFreedon". "My thoughts and prayers are with you", Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA 16 District) tweeted.

"The local police has reportedly held Lashkar terrorist Abu Ismail responsible for carrying out the attack with the assistance of local Hizbul Mujahideen cadre. We must stand united against these deplorable acts of terror", Rep. John Culberson tweeted. The forces managed to kill three terrorists after an all-night encounter in Budgam in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday morning.

"The people of Kashmir have strongly condemned the terror attack on Amarnath yatris".

The attack breaks an unspoken code of not harming the pilgrims, and, therefore, the state's tourism-dependant economy, and is a signal that Pakistan is upping the ante, added Gurmeet Kanwal, defence expert at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis. Anger poured on the streets as civil society groups and traders came together to denounce the attack and demanded stern action against the killers.
