Maryam Mirzakhani, first woman to win top mathematics prize, dies

Iranian-origin Harvard-studied maths wizard Maryam Mirzakhani died aged 40 after a long battle with breast cancer that had spread to her bones. The prize was for "her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces".

She earned her BSc in mathematics from Iran's Sharif University of Technology in 1999 and her PhD from Harvard University in 2004.

"This is a great honor", she was quoted as saying in 2014.

Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne called Mirzakhani a brilliant theorist "who made enduring contributions and inspired thousands of women to pursue math and science". "It breaks my heart [.] gone far too soon", wrote Naderi, a former director of Solar Systems Exploration at NASA.

The president further expressed condolences to the country's scientific community and the bereaved family of Mirzakhani over her death.

"You're torturing yourself along the way", she would offer, "but life isn't supposed to be easy". Marie-Curie had Nobel prizes in physics and chemistry at the beginning of the 20th century, but in mathematics this is the first time we have a woman winning the most prestigious prize.

"It's like being lost in a jungle and trying to use all the knowledge that you can gather to come up with some new tricks, and with some luck you might find a way out", she added.

Professor Maryam Mirzakhani was the recipient of the 2014 Fields Medal, the top honor in mathematics. She said in interviews that she liked the interdisciplinary connections and implications of her work.

A self-professed "slow" mathematician, Mirzakhani denied herself the easy path, choosing instead to tackle thornier issues. "Things evolve, and then you look back at a character, and it's completely different from your first impression".

Mirzakhani is survived by her husband, Jan Vondrák, and a daughter, Anahita - who once referred to her mother's work as "painting" because of the doodles and drawings that marked her process of working on proofs and problems, according to an obituary released by Stanford.
