Denton County Reports First Human Case of West Nile Virus for 2017

The city is warning people to take precautions after mosquitos caught in a trap have tested positive for West Nile virus.

Denton County Public Health said the person who came down with it lives in Little Elm.

Last year, Minnesota saw more than 65 cases of West Nile across the state. No human cases of the disease have been reported in Georgia this year; however, humans are susceptible to EEE.

"West Nile virus cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes and can be transmitted to people by the bite of an infected mosquito", the statement from the city read. Symptoms appear in three to 14 days and include fever headache and body aches.

"Symptoms they're typically going to be mild", Department Spokesperson Melaney Arnold said.

Wear protective clothing.If you are in an area with many mosquitoes, wear loose fitting, light coloured, full-length trousers, and a long-sleeved shirt.

The resident lives in Little Elm and was diagnosed with West Nile Fever. In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur. West Nile virus is a risk.

Outdoor activities at dusk or dawn, when mosquitos are most active, should also be avoided.

Mosquitoes haven't yet been tested with the virus in any surrounding in counties, including St. Joseph County.

Eliminate standing water around your home, where mosquitoes breed.

Use an insect repellent that contains DEET for your family members that are older than six months of age.

Officials say residents should check their property for standing water in light of all the recent rainfall.
