Sri Lanka's struggle continues in Galle Test vs India (Lead Lunch Report)

The record was previously held by Sachin Tendulkar who got to 1000 runs away from home as India's Test skipper in 19 innings - Kohli got there in only 17. From the moment Kohli won the toss, India bossed this Test match in Galle, and that is despite the wicket providing very little assistance for the bowlers. While Dhawan made 190 and Pujara hit 153 in the first innings, the skipper scored an unbeaten 103 in the second essay. However, the Indian selectors thieved the long vacation from the Gabbar and summoned him for the three-Test series in Sri Lanka, after Murali Vijay was ruled out due to injury.

"We are a more experienced side now. He bowls around 135, so he is a great asset and I have mentioned this before as well", he said.

Virat Kohli has equaled his franchise team-mate AB De Villiers' record to become only the third Indian and tenth overall batsman to score 45 worldwide centuries across all formats, he has 17 centuries to his name in Test matches while he has scored 28 in One Day Internationals, he is only behind Sachin Tendulkar (49) and Ricky Ponting (30) in terms of most centuries by a batsman in ODIs.

Karunaratne's stubborn 208-ball innings took him past 2,500 career Test runs but there was not enough support at the other end.

The Lankan opening pair of Dimuth Karunaratne and Upul Tharanga came to chase down the target and had a good start. Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav chipped in with a wicket each.

Kusal Mendis (36) did well until he poked at one from Jadeja and got a faint edge through the keeper, with Kohli opting to review after a not out decision on the field, ultraedge provided confirmation of a noise as the ball past the bat. The TV umpire gave it out after a Kohli appeal. Karunaratne (85 not out), Niroshan Dickwella (48 not out) went undefeated for tea after adding 76 runs for the fifth wicket at the Galle International Stadium here.

Tailenders Nuwan Pradeep (0) and Lahiru Kumara (0) failed to provide any support to Dilruwan Perera (21 not out) and were dismissed in quick succession by Ashwin and Jadeja respectively.

In the 74th over, Karunarathne was bowled by Ashwin while he was on 97.

Two overs after Kohli completed his 17th Test century, India declared the innings, setting a target of 550 for Sri Lanka in the final innings. "We bounced back well but he had by then got off to a terrific start". They were without Asela Gunaratne in both innings, however.
