Sheriff Joe Arpaio Falls Victim to Biased Judicial System

The political defiance that made Joe Arpaio popular and seemingly untouchable as metro Phoenix's sheriff of 24 years ultimately led to his downfall as he was convicted of a crime for ignoring a US court order to stop traffic patrols that targeted immigrants.

Arpaio's attorneys argued that the 85-year-old ex-sheriff delegated responsibility of immigration enforcement to MCSO's Human Smuggling Unit. The misdemeanor is punishable by up to six months in jail.

While Joe Arpaio claimed just last week that he was "optimistic" about his chances of beating the criminal contempt charges levied against him, the judge in his bench trial ultimately sided with the prosecution.

"Her verdict is contrary to what every single witness testified in the case", the former sheriff's legal team said in the statement. The order that Arpaio chose to continue even though he clearly knew about the orders. The group said requiring officers to enforce immigration law puts them at "risk of being found guilty of significant legal violations".

"This verdict is a vindication for the many victims of Joe Arpaio's immigration policies, which were unconstitutional to begin with, and were doubly illegal when Arpaio flouted the court's orders", the ACLU said following the verdict. Prosecutors allege that Arpaio's deputies defied the injunction for at least 18 months. In that order, Snow told MCSO to stop detaining illegal immigrants unless deputies had probable cause they broke state laws unrelated to immigration.

"Judge Snow issued a clear and definite ruling enjoining [Arpaio] from detaining persons for further investigation without reasonable suspicion that a crime has been or is being committed", Bolton wrote, referring to the previous judge's order. They believe a jury would be more favorable toward the former sheriff.

More news: Heavy clashes again erupt outside Temple Mount

Last November 8 was a bittersweet day for nativists in Phoenix.

Then the federal government charged him with criminal contempt of court, charges on which he was tried this summer and resulted in Monday's guilty verdict by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton, The Arizona Republic reports.

Arpaio was ousted in the same election that sent Trump to the White House.

That development is not sitting well with End Times radio broadcaster Rick Wiles, who used his program yesterday to call on President Trump to not only pardon Arpaio, but to also to place him in charge of the Department of Homeland Security.

The former sheriff served as the top lawman for Maricopa County for more than two decades. Arpaio's police department was found to routinely racially profiled Latinos, by prolonging traffic stops to determine the immigration status of individuals.
