Dozens killed in Afghan Shi'ite mosque attack

A suicide bomber has killed at least 29 people and wounded dozens more after blowing himself up in a Shiite mosque in Afghanistan.

The blast hit the entrance of the Jawadya mosque on Tuesday evening.

However Mehdi Hadid, a lawmaker from Herat, who went to the site soon after the explosion told The Associated Press that the scene was one of horrific carnage.

Officials initially said two attackers had been involved in the incident, but in a statement issued by the governor, he said only one had been involved. "They are both dead", he added.

Other local reports suggested a combined explosion and gunfire attack.

About 30 people are reported to be wounded, and local officials say the death toll is expected to rise.

Afghan interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish initially said he thought it was a auto bomb and tweeted that there was a possibility that it was a improvised explosive device.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Afghanistan is still suffering from insecurity and violence years after the United States and its allies invaded the country in 2001 as part of Washington's so-called war on terror.

Numerous casualties from all walks of live have been civilians, with injury numbers rising for the past five years amid increased attacks.

Yesterday a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the embassy, allowing at least three other militants to breach the compound, unleashing an hours-long gun battle that killed two people. It is not clear what the intended target was.
