Prince Philip to retire after final official engagement

In the capacity of Captain General of the Royal Marines, Prince Philip chose the Captain General's Parade to be the engagement which marks the end of his public duties.

Hundreds of well-wishers clutching umbrellas gathered outside the gates to cheer on the prince, who is famed for his salty and often politically incorrect sense of humour.

It comes after he announced he would retire in the autumn after completing 22,219 solo engagements since 1952.

Green added: "The Duke of Edinburgh is all about challenges, he's all about charity work and helping people and having somebody like the Duke as head of the Royal Marines, it just helps the Corps with our own challenges".

In retirement, the Duke will likely enjoy more leisure time at Windsor Castle in Berkshire - he is an avid carriage driver and enjoys oil painting. He has also carried out 637 visits overseas on his own and given nearly 5500 speeches.

The prince, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, attended a parade of Royal Marines at Buckingham Palace and met servicemen that had taken part in a 1,664-mile race to raise money for the Royal Marine's Charity.

In typical fashion, Prince Philip offered a timely quip about his retirement following the news.

Their son and heir, Prince charles, and grandsons Princes William and Harry are expected to take on additional royal duties to step in for Prince Philip at public engagements from this month.

"In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of the Queen", read the palace's statement.

"Prince Philip, whom the Queen described as her "strength and stay" during her record-breaking reign, passed away XXXXXXX", it continued.

While his diary of engagements will come to an end, Buckingham Palace said Prince Philip may still decide to attend certain events alongside the Queen in the future.

The British public, so used to seeing the prince accompany the Queen up the aisle to attend a church service, received a glimpse of what it might be like to see the Queen without the prince, in settings they have usually been seen together, in 2012.
