US President Trump Signs Russia Sanctions Bill Into Law

The New York Times reported earlier in July that the president signed off on the initial statement from his son. Declaring parts of the bill unconstitutional, the statement says the bill infringes on the president's authority "to recognize foreign governments", among other things.

Trump Jr. had earlier released a series of emails showing he attended the session to obtain damaging information about his father's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Faced with the embarrassing possibility of being overruled by Trump's own party, the White House announced late Friday that he "approves the bill and intends to sign it".

Although Donald Trump's desires better relations with Russian Federation, his efforts have been repeatedly faced hurdles by findings of US intelligence agencies that Russian Federation interfered to help the Republican against Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

"He certainly didn't dictate (the statement)", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told a media briefing Wednesday morning (AEST).

"The president did not draft the response", Sekulow said.

After initially trying to dodge a bullet with the claims about Russia's adoption policy, Trump Jr admitted that the meeting had in fact been about getting information to discredit Clinton even though the meeting "went nowhere".

Four days later, on NBC's "Meet the Press," Mr. Sekulow repeated the denial: "The president was not involved in the drafting of the statement and did not issue the statement".

Sekulow's Meet the Press comments may have been meant to insulate the president from involvement in Trump Jr.'s efforts to collude with Russian Federation.

"We note there is a certain contradiction in the statements being voiced in the White House". "I'm assuming that was between Donald Trump Junior, between Don Junior and his lawyer".

This echoes what Republicans said in mid-July when Senator John Thune (S.D.) said, "I'd like to see infrastructure get done".

"This was. unnecessary one of the advisers told the Post".

That Congress would tie Trump's hands on this issue reflects a deepening concern about the administration's posture toward Russian Federation, which critics have characterized as naive.
