Auburn football lands inside top 15 of 2017 preseason coaches poll

The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 6 nationally in the Amway Coaches Poll, which was released Thursday morning. Colorado is receiving 72 Top 25 votes, OR is receiving 37, Arizona is receiving two and UCLA is receiving one. Ohio State is second and Florida State third.

Auburn is on track to return more starters this season than it has in more than a decade, including running back Kamryn Pettway, who led the SEC in rushing yards per game last fall.

The remaining seven first-place votes went to defending national champion Clemson, but the Tigers will start 2017 at No. 5 overall. Only the Crimson Tide, however, will start in the top 10.

The Cowboys received nine votes, good for 45th overall. In addition to the Buckeyes, Penn State opens at No. 6, followed by No. 9 MI and No. 10 Wisconsin.

The Buckeyes trailed just Alabama for the top spot in the first poll of the year.

As for Big 12 schools, Oklahoma was eighth, Oklahoma State was 11th, Kansas State was 19th and West Virginia was 20th.

Also from the Pac-12, Washington is ranked seventh, Stanford is 14th and Utah is 25th.

Ohio State opened the year at No. 2 with five first-place votes, slightly edging out third-place Florida State, who will play the top-ranked Tide in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic on September 2 in Atlanta.
