Circuit House echoes with need to ban nuclear weapons

Code-named "Little Boy", the bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945, shortly before the end of the war.

Peace activists will have events in Oak Ridge and Knoxville starting Saturday and ending Wednesday that will recall the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, during World War II, and the activists will call for a ban on nuclear weapons.

Japan yesterday marked 72 years since the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, with the nation's traditional contradictions over atomic weapons again coming into focus.

Otherwise, the day passed off peacefully without the usual controversy of political leaders visiting the Yasukuni shrine where World War II military leaders of Japan are enshrined.

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui (R) offers a new list of A-bomb dead, people who died since last year's anniversary from the side effects of radiation, at the 72nd anniversary memorial service for victims of the bombing. The memorial ceremony took place in the Peace Park in central Hiroshima.

"For us to truly realise a "world without nuclear weapons", the participation of both nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states is necessary", he said.

Following the adoption by 122 United Nations members of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, all countries must now work to get closer to a world free of nuclear weapons.

A day before the Hiroshima anniversary, the United Nations Security Council unanimously voted to impose new sanctions on North Korea over last month's long-range missile tests.

A number of speakers also talked about the United Nations last month adopting an worldwide treaty banning nuclear weapons.

"The states possessing nuclear weapons have special responsibility to undertake concrete and irreversible steps on nuclear disarmament", Guterres stressed.

Japanese officials routinely argue that they abhor nuclear weapons, but the nation's defence is firmly set under the United States nuclear umbrella.

"Our dream of a world free of nuclear weapons remains far from reality. Thousands of American lives lost", Trump tweeted.

Mr Barack Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima in May previous year, paying a moving tribute to the victims of the devastating bombing.
