Mbete determines #NoConfidenceVote will be via secret ballot

A parliamentary vote of no confidence in South African President Jacob Zuma will be held by secret ballot, the national assembly Speaker said Monday.

'The motion of no-confidence in President Jacob Zuma is an inevitable outcome of the myriad scandals in which he has regrettably embroiled himself and his office, ' they added.

"Members of the parliament take an oath of faithfulness to the Republic of South Africa, and obedience to the Constitution and laws, and there is no constitutional obligation for a member to swear allegiance to his or her political party", Mbete said in her announcement.

Our correspondent reported that the secret vote could "embolden" some ruling party members to vote for Zuma's ousting.

AfriBusiness welcomes Speaker Baleka Mbete's decision that the vote of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma to be held in Parliament on 8 August 2017 will be done via a secret ballot.

"The people of South Africa look to parliament to give direction in challenging times". "This is in the best interest of the country", Mbete said. Almost all of the 149 opposition MPs have stated they will vote for Mr Zuma to be removed. The opposition argued that since parliament elects the president by secret ballot, it should be able to use the same process to remove him.

The ANC said last week its lawmakers would have to be "bewitched" to vote for the no-confidence motion.

"Tomorrow is the beginnings of an opportunity", said one ANC lawmaker who declined to be named.

The ANC caucus has also used sentiment and scare tactics to warn its MPs against supporting the vote of no confidence with chief whip Jackson Mthembu likening voting Zuma out to dropping a "nuclear bomb" on South Africa.

Mr. Zuma, had survived four no-confidence votes during his eight years in power thanks to loyal voting by African National Congress, ANC, lawmakers, who form a strong parliamentary majority.

But even if a few ANC members dare to break the party discipline and vote against Zuma, that would weaken the president politically and reduce his chances of serving until the end of his second term in 2019, analysts say.

Parliament will vote on the motion on Tuesday and if it succeeds, Zuma, in power since 2009, and his entire cabinet would have to step down.
