Venezuela's Supreme Court Gives Opposition Mayor 15-Month Jail Term

The Trump administration on Wednesday imposed sanctions on eight more Venezuelan officials, including the brother of late socialist leader Hugo Chavez, to punish them for their roles in President Nicolas Maduro's creation of a new legislative superbody, USA officials said.

"The responsibility for the human rights violations we are recording lies at the highest levels of government", UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said.

On Tuesday Padrino addressed the Constituent Assembly in uniform, after the military earned unanimous backing from the body.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court imposed a jail term on the mayor of Caracas, Ramon Muchacho, who is a member of the opposition.

Analysts said discord could be seen in the lower ranks of the security forces. He said they were not part of Operation David but supported it.

The new constitutional assembly has signalled it will act swiftly in following Maduro's commands, voting to replace chief prosecutor Luisa Ortega Diaz with a government loyalist and to create a "truth commission" that will wield unusual power to prosecute and levy sentences, The Independent reported.

A further five nations participated in the meeting but didn't sign the document.

Opposition leaders and a growing list of foreign government have refused to recognize the new assembly.

"We are chavistas until death", Maradona wrote on his official Facebook page on Monday night, using a term to refer to supporters of late former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza told representatives from nations including Cuba and Bolivia that long-standing USA aggressions against the South American nation have "entered a much stronger phase".

"The worldwide pressure (...) is necessary for that in Venezuela there is a political change", said Luis Florido, chief of the commission on foreign policy of the Parliament of venezuela.

Relatively wealthy Chacao was the center of the most intense clashes between protesters and national security forces that have left at least 120 dead and hundreds injured over the past four months.
