Canadian Army Sets Up Camp for Irregular Migrants

Canadian officials told the AP they estimated 400 illegals crossed the border at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle this Sunday alone.

Canada Border Services Agency spokeswoman Judith Gadbois-St-Cyr said the camp was being set up because too many people were crossing the border for them to be processed immediately.

"The Canadian Armed Forces are aware of the hard situation that is requiring significant resources of Canada Border Services Agency, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other partners in the area of St-Bernard-de-Lacolle", the military said in a statement.

The Canadians arrest the migrants as soon as they step across the border.

Worried Haitians in the U.S. - many of them spurred by misinformation regarding the ease of obtaining residency in Canada - began crossing the border in increased numbers this month, hoping to obtain refugee status in Canada.

Patrick Lefort, a spokesperson for the Canada Border Services Agency, said there are now 700 people waiting to be processed who have crossed at Roxham Road. Wednesday, August 9, 2017.

Daniel Le Bouthillier, head of media relations for National Defence, said the military received the request from civilian authorities.

The military would have no role in security matters, Le Bouthillier said in emailed statement, adding, "When the site is completed, the military will return to their home base".

The city's old Royal Victoria Hospital, which closed in 2015, will also be opened up to new arrivals, provincial authorities said Wednesday. The construction of the camp began just days after Montreal's Olympic Stadium began taking in refugees.

Most of those crossing into Canada in recent days are Haitians who have been living in the USA for years, according to Canadian officials. The stadium is now being used as a temporary shelter for some of the hundreds of asylum claimants pouring across the New York-Quebec border every day.

More than 3300 people crossed into Quebec between 1 January and 30 June.

"They are hearing that Canada doesn't deport people".

John Kelly, the then homeland security secretary, eventually allowed for a six-month extension to the program, which gives Haitians in the United States temporary protected status (TPS) as their country recovers from a series of disasters including the 2010 quake, a cholera epidemic and Hurricane Matthew.

The Trudeau government ended its own TPS designation for Haitians previous year, inviting its 3,200 holders to apply for residency on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.
