World's oldest man, who survived Auschwitz, dies at 113

The world's oldest man, who survived both the Holocaust and World War I and eventually moved to Israel, died this week in Haifa, one month before his 114th birthday.

A devout Orthodox Jew, Kristal wrapped phylacteries - leather-wrapped cubes containing Torah scriptures and worn during prayer - daily for the last 100 years, the Times reported.

Krista was supposed to celebrate his bar mitzvah in 1916 but could not due to the battles of the First World War, which reached his hometown in Poland.

Kristal, who was born on September 15, 1903, was in the news a year ago for another reason.

He was officially recognized as the world's oldest man by the Guinness Book of World Records in March 2016.

However, when war in Europe broke out again and Poland became occupied by Nazi forces, Lodz's Jewish quarter subsequently became a ghetto and Kristal was deported to the infamous death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Kristal survived the Second World War - the only member of his family to do so - but weighed less than six stone in 1945.

He and his wife were then sent to Auschwitz where she was murdered.Kristal remarried in 1947 and emigrated to Israel in 1950.

According to Tablet Mag, he thanked the Soviet soldiers who rescued him by making them candies.

"I don't know the secret for long life", Kristal once said, according to Guinness.

According to the news site Ynet, Mr. Kristal leaves two children, nine grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Shula Kupershtuch says: "He always saw only light and good in everything".
