We don' trust Supreme Court but we will go anyway - Raila Odinga

Kenya's opposition leader Raila Odinga has said he will mount a legal challenge to the result of last week's election, in which he was defeated by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Some street stalls were closed in Nairobi's opposition slum stronghold of Mathare, where police battled protesters after incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the victor of the August 8 election, but others stayed open.

Mr Kofi Annan, the Chair of the Kofi Annan Foundation, has applauded the people of Kenya for their commitment to democracy, which they demonstrated during their recent elections by turning out to vote enthusiastically.

Opposition allegations that the elections were rigged unleashed a deadly wave of protests. Police have denied they killed that many people, saying they shot some criminals who attacked them and that none of the protests were peaceful.

Odinga said the decision to approach the Supreme Court was taken after the government announced Tuesday it would close two civil society organizations that planned to challenge the election outcome in court. Those charges were later dropped for lack of evidence.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta urged peace and lawful demonstrations Monday, as the capital appeared to resume ordinary life following last week's disputed elections.

Odinga speaks at a news conference at the offices of the National Super Alliance coalition in Nairobi on Wednesday.

Since the results were announced, Odinga supporters have mounted sporadic protests in Kisumu and the Nairobi slums that are his strongholds.

But they instead released a statement postponing his remarks to Wednesday, given what they called the "urgency, complexity and delicate nature" of the issues being considered. But within hours, the Interior Ministry reversed that suspension. On television, tourism officials said reservations were steady. Odinga reportedly met with the girl's family in Kibera.

Her father Joseph Abanja said: "They started moving and said, "let's go".

Outrage is growing however over police brutality and use of excessive force during the crackdown on protesters.

Uhuru Kenyatta, who is the sitting President and declared victor of the election by the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC), is the son of Kenya's first President and Founding Father, Jomo Kenyatta, while Raila Odinga's father, Jaramogi Odinga served as his vice, but later became an opposition leader following an era of irreconcilable differences between the two. After several months, Odinga lost his case.
