RT Viral: Google invites United States users to check if they're clinically depressed

Developed by American drug company Pfizer Inc, PHQ-9 (patient health questionnaire) is a clinically validated screening questionnaire created to help users identify the level of depression they are suffering from.

Google and the National Alliance on Mental Illness are launching an online survey to help Google users decide whether they might have depression and should seek help.

When users search for keywords like "depression" search results will include a knowledge panel with a clickable link labelled "check if you're clinically depressed".

For a lot of people, their first port of call is a Google search: terms such as "depression" or "am I depressed" are common.

The PHQ-9 is clinically validated "to test what your likely level of depression may be".

Google is partnering with the National Alliance on Mental Illness to help raise awareness about clinical depression and encourage those suffering from it to get treatment.

"Clinical depression is a treatable condition which can impact many aspects of a person's life", NAMI CEO Mary Giliberti wrote in a Google blog post. The evaluations are kept private and candidates can instantly seek help, if required.

Of course, the PHQ-9 is not the be-all end-all of depression screening, but it is a starting point toward getting a proper diagnosis.

Of course, the irony is that scores of researchers now say incessant Googling could be at least partially responsible for some mental health problems-especially when it comes to seeking out information about one's health. In other words, the questionnaire may suggest that people have clinical depression when they don't actually have the condition. Once you do, scroll down until you see the info card and press on "Check if you're clinically depressed".

Wait, will Google hold onto this medical information?

This depression screening questionnaire comes as the newest from its series of health-related developments.

Technology giant Google launched a special questionnaire that will assist users in the United States suffering from depression.
