Bill Nye: Disney Owes Me $9M

During Bill Nye the Science Guy's initial run from 1994 to 1999, it was nominated for 23 Emmy Awards, winning 19.

According to the documentation that was handed over to the courts, Bill Nye became suspicious of Disney's activities when he was told in 2008 that he owed the company $500,000 due to an accounting error.

Two decades after production wrapped up, Nye has accused Disney of fraud and breach of contract in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.

According to Variety, the lawsuit against Disney states Disney and Nye came to an agreement that Nye would earn 16% of what "Bill Nye The Science Guy." brought in over the years.

He filed a lawsuit Thursday against Disney along with ABC Television, Buena Vista Television, Touchstone Television Productions, Disney Educational Productions, Disney Movie Club, and Buena Vista Home Entertainment alleging that they engaged in "an ongoing, deliberate conspiracy to deceive Mr. Nye and the [other owners of the series], and deprive them of their rightly owed share of the net profits from the [Bill Nye the Science Guy] series and derivative works". Apparently, a July 2008 letter claiming Nye owed Buena Vista Television more than $400,000 in mistakenly overpaid funds left "The Science Guy" suspicious of the company. The host says that he tried to get an explanation but was thrown around for years, resulting in him hiring an external auditor. At one point, the company said it was experiencing a backlog of audits and would not be able to begin the process for three or four years. Upon further analysis, the auditor has increased that figure to no less than $9.3 million.

Disney and the other defendants did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to the suit, Disney reported gross revenues of $26 million, but also reported costs of $20 million - for a show largely underwritten by federal grants.

Nye claims that he has suffered damages of at least $9.4 million, while the defendants enriched themselves with "ill-gotten" profits of over $28 million. Disney have not released a statement on the lawsuit or Nye's claims.
