Axelsen topples Lin in badminton final; Okukara wins classic

Almost two hours of fantastic badminton ended in disappointment for India's PV Sindhu, who played her heart out but in the end lost to Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the women's singles final of the 2017 BWF World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

South Korea's Son Wan Ho returns against India's Srikanth Kidambi during their quarter-final men's singles match during the 2017 BWF World Championships of badminton at Emirates Arena in Glasgow. Sindhu had won bronze in 2013 and 2014, while Saina had bagged a silver in the 2015 edition of the event at Jakarta.

Padukone is also credited for being the first Indian to win a medal at the Badminton World Championships. Okuhara levelled the scores at 14-all and then took four-point lead to make it 18-14. But soon after that, Sindhu replied to the opponent. It turned out to be a battle of attrition between Nehwal and Okuhara.

Rejuvenated now, Saina said that it is because of her coach and parents that she is back on court.

Sindhu's ranking rose by a spot-on Thursday from her previous fifth spot while Srikanth slipped two places to now sit on tenth. Both the players exchanged points on their serves to keep their grip on the game. But, then the Indian started working on her plans and the next two points on offer.

Okuhara took the lead (13-12) for the first time in the second game.

At 15-13, another exceptional rally unfolded with Sindhu making the Japanese run to the deep corners and even though Okuhara made some remarkable retrieves she miscued a shot at the forecourt as Sindhu led 16-13. Sweet because she beat all odds to win bronze, bitter because she failed to convert it into silver or gold. Okuhara played probably the best badminton and took a 11-10 lead the break before sealing the second comeback 21-17.

In the decider, Sindhu moved to an 11-6 lead early on but Cheung once again caught up with the Indian at 12-12.

In the past few years, the half smash has become an integral part of every player's armoury but to retrieve them also put a lot of pressure on the lower part of the body and the shoulder socket. But Okuhara held her nerve better to clinch the game 21-19. Unforced error from Sindhu, who played it on the net, gave Okuhara first Championship point.
