Death toll from Barcelona terror attack rises to 16

The Mediterranean city has been in mourning after a driver ploughed into crowds on Las Ramblas on August 17, followed hours later by a auto attack in the seaside resort town of Cambrils.

The death toll from August 17/18 terror attacks in Spain rose to 16 on Sunday, after a 51-year-old German woman died from injuries suffered in a vehicle attack in the Catalan capital, Barcelona.

She was left in a critical condition when a militant drove the rented vehicle into crowds in Barcelona's famous Las Ramblas boulevard on August 17.

An estimated 500,000 peace marchers flooded the heart of Barcelona on the weekend the shouting "I'm not afraid" - a public rejection of violence following extremist attacks, Spain's deadliest in more than a decade.

The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the two attacks.

Spanish King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy went to the challenge, which was likewise a show of Barcelona's solidarity and social decent variety.

The phrase "no tinc por" is also reportedly being embraced by the political class in the country in response to the ISIS-backed violence.

Taxi drivers, emergency workers and ordinary citizens who helped in the early hours will head the march, followed by authorities, Colau said.

Medical authorities said that 22 people wounded in the attacks are still being treated in hospitals.

Five people remain in a critical condition.

In the northeastern town of Ripoll, home for numerous attackers, members of the local Muslim community and other residents gathered on Saturday in a central square to condemn the deadly attacks.

According to reports in Spanish media, the cell had planned a much bigger attack, with possible targets including the Sagrada Família, Antoni Gaudí's much-loved, half-finished church in Barcelona.

A further two men have been freed, while police say the other eight members of the terror cell are all dead.
