Southwest Airlifted Hundreds of Passengers From Flooded Texas Airport

Nine airport, including Houston's two main airports - George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport - remain closed Monday as the region continues to grapple with devastating flooding throughout the area.

More than 1,480 US flights had been preemptively grounded by Sunday evening, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. A very small number of flights were expected to resume at Intercontinental by noon Monday, however, the airport authority is now saying that operations will be halted until further notice.

Hurricane Harvey, which made landfall late Friday, has lingered over the area, creating devastating floods in Houston and the surrounding area.

Southwest Airlines evacuated almost 500 passengers stranded at Houston's Hobby Airport on Sunday, according to multiple media outlets.

By the end of the day Saturday, almost 2,700 flights had been cancelled nationwide due to the storm.

Airport officials say the cancellations have impacted a few hundred passengers at this time.

According to FlightAware, 22 flights - 13 percent - from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport were cancelled Monday.

The Federal Aviation Administration shut down the airport earlier in the day, leaving customers stranded.

The runways at Houston Hobby were underwater as of 14:44 local time today, according to local reports.

The nonstop flight only operates on Saturdays, however.

Turkish Airlines (THY) has canceled the flight from Istanbul to Houston, said the company in a message on August 28.

Before the rescue, Southwest released a statement about Houston's Hobby on its Twitter page.

NewsChannel 5 has partnered with the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to set up a fund helping storm victims in Texas. A flight from Chicago to San Francisco, for example, could become delayed or canceled if the plane or crew scheduled to fly it gets knocked off track by the problems in Texas.
