Britain in 'good position' in Brexit talks: PM May's spokeswoman

European Union chief executive Jean-Claude Juncker blasted Britain's failure to answer "huge numbers of questions" on its Brexit plans as negotiators held a new round of talks on a divorce due in less than two years.

Sufficient progress by October may be hard.

With the third round of negotiations between David Davis and Michel Barnier underway Mr Burns account sent several tweets directed at Mr Barnier's account, each an hour apart, all telling him to "publish now" the legal basis for his demands for payment. "But Ukraine is not a European country in terms of the EU membership", he pointed out.

Meanwhile, Theresa May has insisted the United Kingdom is making the running in Brexit negotiations following criticism from Brussels about a lack of clarity from her government.

Echoing David Davis' calls for Brussels to show greater flexibility in its approach to Brexit discussions, the Prime Minister has repeated assertions that Britain is "in a good position" and ready to "move on" to negotiating its future trade and security arrangements with Europe.

As day two of the latest round of Brexit negotiations got underway, Mr Juncker insisted to a gathering of European Union ambassadors in Brussels that the UK's Brexit position papers to date were not satisfactory, and that there were still "enormous" issues to be settled.

The key issues of separation are the nature of the post-Brexit border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and that between Gibraltar - a British oversees territory - and Spain.

Juncker added: 'First of all we settle the past before we look forward to the future'.

The spokesman also said it is now time to move on to the next port of discussion.

Denmark's ambassador to the UK Claus Grube warned against the "no deal" rhetoric, telling the BBC: 'I think it's better that we go to the negotiating table and we talk about things.

The UK's Davis insists the country wants a mutually beneficial trade deal, but there are points on the European Union agenda that London will never accept - despite calls from the Labour Party to remain in the single market at least.

So far there have been no apparent breakthroughs, stoking talk of the need for a transition period after the two-year Brexit process ends March 29, 2019.

Dieter Kempf said that there doesn't appear to be a single agreed British government position.
