National Football League cancels Texans-Cowboys game

The Texans were planning to head home to flood-ravaged Houston after their final preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys was canceled Wednesday.

With all of the flooding and destruction that the city of Houston and the surrounding areas have sustained, it could be hard for the Texans to host their regular season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars in just 11 days at NRG Stadium.

Cowboys' officials began selling tickets to the game Tuesday for $25, with all proceeds from the ticket sales and parking fees - also established at $25 - going directly to Houston flood relief. Those who have purchased tickets to the game can get a refund; if not, the money will still go to the relief fund.

Texans' head coach Bill O'Brien made it clear this week that he believes it's important for the city to not move the game, but still play it in Houston.

"This is bigger than football".

That's a surprising decision because the National Football League had specifically stated that the game would go on, in Dallas, where the Texans have been practicing all week after they were displaced by Hurricane Harvey. "The team feels it is imperative to get back home to help the Houston community recover from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey", the team said. "I think it's extremely important that we get home as quickly as we possibly can".

The Houston Texans have been in Frisco, Texas this week but will return to Houston soon.

Watt said he's been moved by watching everyone that has helped out in the crisis so far and is looking forward to pitching in.

"It's very hard", Texans star defensive end JJ Watt said in an emotional video on Sunday, "not only because we have family and friends back there - some guys have young kids, some guys have wives and families - but that's our city". He also raised the goal of the fundraiser to $10 million. It's bigger than any of us.
