USA successfully tests missile interception in Hawaii

"John Paul Jones detected and tracked a target missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii with its onboard AN/SPY-1 radar, and onboard SM-6 missiles executed the intercept", the MDA said on Wednesday.

Hawaii missile test on Monday: The latest US test came days after North Korea fired a Hwasong-12 missile over Japan, an ally of the United States.

Monday's test missile was launched from Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai in Hawaii.

Instead, Trump's terse, written statement reiterating that all US options are being considered pointed to an administration cautiously searching for an effective policy, even as the North's test risked endangering Japanese civilians.

In May, the USA, in the first test of its ground-based intercept system at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, intercepted an intercontinental ballistic missile launched from the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, which is 4,200 miles away.

"We will continue developing ballistic missile-defence technologies to stay ahead of the threat as it evolves", he said.

North Korea's most recent missile test on Tuesday prompted the Japanese government to tell residents to take cover.

In June, the John Paul Jones failed to shoot down its target missile in a similar test off Hawaii.

This exercise marked the seventh intercept test of the Aegis Baseline 9.1 (BMD 5.0CU) Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) tracking and engagement capabilities and the third successful SM-6 BMD intercept test using Baseline 9.1.

This is not the first time the USA forces have conducted this sort of test.

But yesterday's SM-6 test apparently wasn't a direct response to North Korea's most recent launch; the Hawaii operation had been planned for some time, according to The New York Times. The U.S. military still has numerous missile defense assets - from Patriot interceptors to Terminal High Altitude Area Defense systems - in the area though.
