Harvey produces so much rain, NWS adds new colour to maps

The National Hurricane Center on Sunday night predicted Harvey to move just offshore Monday before slowly moving northeast toward the Louisiana-Texas border.

With 15 to 25 more inches expected in the Houston and Galveston areas, catastrophic flooding is expected to continue, the agency warned on Monday, with eventual rainfall totals potentially reaching 50 inches in some locations. While the original map had simple dark purple for 15 inches or more of rain, the new, more accurate version of the NWS's graphic uses dark purple for 15 inches to 20 inches, plum for 20 inches to 30 inches, and a light pinkish lavender for more than 30 inches. Both of these records are higher than the previous record of 48 inches set in 1978 during tropical cyclone Amelia which hit Medina, Texas.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a ranger station on the island of Kauai measured at least 52 inches of rain from a hurricane that passed by in August 1950.

"The tremendous rainfall in Texas is literally and figuratively off the map", an NWS spokesperson told Co.Design in an email.

That record rainfall is thanks to an unusual situation. More rain fell on Sunday than in the wettest month on record for Seattle.

The National Weather Service in Houston reported that a rain gauge at Cedar Bayou, east of Houston, picked up 51.88 inches of rain during the duration of the storm as of Tuesday afternoon.

On August 27 alone, Houston received 16.07 inches of rain, making it the wettest day in the city's history.

Over the past three days, almost 4,000 flights have been canceled nationwide, many due to Harvey.

NWS put out this image of estimated rainfall in the region Tuesday.
