US, Russia continue to negotiate with Gulf countries over crisis

Doha denies the claims and accuses the other countries of an attack on its sovereignty.

"We welcome all initiatives to resolve the Gulf crisis, and we support the Kuwaiti efforts in that direction", Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said during a joint press conference in Doha with his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdelrahman Al Thani.

Unfortunately, the visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov showed no signs of having eased tensions among the Gulf Arab powers.

The announcement comes a day after Trump spoke with Saudi King Salman and urged an end to a months-long diplomatic dispute with Qatar.

Oil rich Qatar has sought legal redress owing to the ongoing blockade with plans to demand for compensation for losses incurred by the crisis championed by four Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Trump made the remarks during a telephonic conversation with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on August 30, the White House said in readout of the conversation between the two leaders.

The president and the king also discussed Harvey.

The Saudi move on June 5 was taken along with the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt to protest against what they say is Qatar's support of groups and individuals linked to extremism and terrorism.

Other countries including Libya, Yemen and the Maldives have followed suit.
