SC to hear plea against deportation of Rohingyas

The insurgent group that claimed responsibility for last week's attacks, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army - ARSA - said it acted to protect Rohingya communities. PM Modi will hold talks with the top leadership in Myanmar including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

The plight of the Rohingya made global headlines in 2015 when thousands of Rohingya were left stranded on boats in southeast Asia with no food or water because no country was willing to welcome them.

"The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the reports of excesses during the security operations conducted by Myanmar's security forces in Rakhine State", according to the statement. Thousands of Rohingya had sought unsuccessfully to flee from the Myanmar side.

The Rohingya are reviled in Mynamar, where the roughly one million-strong community are accused of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

The UN says 38,000 Rohingya have reached Bangladesh, some using overland routes and others crossing the Naf River. Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees are believed to be stuck at the border to Bangladesh.

United Nations sources also said on Friday that some 38,000 Rohingyas had managed to cross into neighboring Bangladesh.

The situation in Rakhine is a "matter of great concern", a senior MEA official said on Friday, adding, "A large number of people have lost their lives". "The anti-Muslim violence of 2012, and the emergence of the new insurgent group previous year were both clear signals that the volatile dynamics of Rakhine state urgently need a political, not just a security, response to address the concerns of all communities in the state".

It has also sought a direction that Rohingyas be provided "basic amenities to ensure that they can live in human conditions as required by global law".

The fighting is a dramatic escalation of a conflict that has simmered since October, when similar but much smaller Rohingya attacks on security posts prompted a brutal military response dogged by allegations of rights abuses.

Kiren Rijiju, India's union minister of state for home affairs, recently told parliament that the central government had asked the states to identify Rohingya Muslims living illegally and initiate deportation processes. They have often met grisly fates at the hands of human traffickers and even the coastguards of other nations.
