US Open: Maria Sharapova suffers fourth-round loss to Anastasija Sevastova

Maria Sharapova reflected positively on her U.S. Open campaign after the former world No. 1's grand slam comeback ended in the fourth round.

Playing just her fifth match since May, Sharapova was treated for a blister on her playing hand early in the third set as 16th-seeded Sevastova surged into the quarter-finals in NY for the second year in a row.

Her summer hard-court season consisted of just one match, a win over Jennifer Brady at Stanford.

"I need a challenge, I love pressure and especially because this is the last major and it's at home."There's no better than the energy here in Ashe when you guys go wild".

The momentum of the match had been quick to change and Sharapova won only one point in losing the first three games of the decider, after which she had treatment for what appeared to be a blister on her right hand. "It's great to get that major out of the way".

The Canadian would have been the youngest Slam quarter-finalist since Michael Chang at the 1990 French Open, youngest US Open quarter-finalist since Andre Agassi in 1988 and first US Open qualifier in the last eight since Gilles Muller in 2008. She had yet to drop a set entering Sunday's match.

It was her first appearance at a Slam since the 2016 Australian Open, where she failed a drugs test and was kicked out of the sport until April this year. You know, playing four matches, playing in front of a big crowd and fans.

The Russian wild card is at her best commanding the center of the court and ripping flat strikes into the corners of the court.

Who will win the US Open titles this year? "I'm very thankful for the opportunity".

Beating Sharapova to the ball repeatedly, Sevastova exposed the deficiencies in the five-time Grand Slam champion: movement, transition game-Sharapova botched some swing volleys and is overhead averse-and an inability to adjust. I will always remember it.

"I don't know how many break points I had before I got the first one", Nadal said.

She continued: "I think there are a lot of positives".

In a freaky fourth-round contest, the Argentine reeled off the last five games after being treated for a leg issue to oust 16th-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 2-6 6-2. If you put me out in the parking lot of Queens in New York City, I'm happy to play there. "I didn't have much practice".

No. 17 seed Sam Querrey, the only American left, faced No. 23 seed Mischa Zverev at night.

"I completely understand the business side of things and everything, but someone who comes back from a drug sentence, performance-enhancing drugs, and then all of the sudden gets to play every single match on centre court, I think that's a questionable thing to do", said the Dane.

"Obviously, I could never say, Oh, yeah, when I was coming back, I'm going to make two semifinals, a quarterfinal". Her outfits still were note flawless - she made her debut and upset the No. 2 seed in the first round dressed in villainous black, and she lost Sunday in pale pink so light it could have been white - and her ability to create drama stayed intact.

"I try to play smart", Sevastava said.
