Petra Kvitova Stuns Wimbledon Champion Garbine Muguruza

Petra Kvitova produced a stunning display of power tennis to defeat Wimbledon champion and title favourite Garbine Muguruza in the fourth round of the US Open. In 1954, a year after she had won the Grand Slam, Maureen Connolly had an accident while riding her horse, broke her right leg and never played again.

Sharapova hadn't played in a major tournament since the Australian Open in January 2016, when she tested positive for the newly banned drug meldonium.

Sharapova tried a bit of everything, even resorting to switching over her racket to hit a few lefty shots.

"I don't think I can find the right words, it was a hard time, all five months (away) were very tough". Both she and Murguruza had failed to drop a single set ahead of their showdown on Arthur Ashe which suggested a close battle was on the cards. For Kvitova, a win over a top-three player signaled that her return was real. "It was just [a] journey, which I didn't know how the journey would end".

She is in the quarterfinals in NY for only the second time in 10 tournament appearances; the other such run came in 2015, when Kvitova lost at that stage to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta. "It means a lot, it's an incredible night to play in front of a great crowd", Kvitova said in her on-court interview on Sunday.

This was the first meeting of the tournament between two grand slam champions and a clash between arguably the two form players of the week.

The Czech, who required extensive surgery on her left hand following the incident a year ago, battled back from 4-1 down in the first set to win the match 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 in Sunday's night session.

Playing in only her eighth tournament this year, Kvitova could be short of match practice but not confidence at the U.S. Open. As Kvitova said, Venus has shone on the big stages in 2017, compiling 19 wins at the Slams compared to 14 on the WTA Tour.

She required extensive surgery on her left hand and confirmed only last week that it still did not feel completely back to normal.

From that moment on, the Czech was in command, moving 5-3 clear after Muguruza steered a volley long and converting her first set point with a smash. "I'm not sure where (Wozniacki) is", said the wildcard. I think maybe it's a bad sign sometimes, that I should be more appreciating than I am probably.

Less celebrated, but maybe more impressive, have been the inspiring stories of Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova, who will meet in the U.S. Open quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta against Argentine Diego Schwartzman will start action on the main arena. The Russian started out with motivation in her match against Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova, winning the first set 7-5, but then ultimately wilted in the next two sets, going out on Arthur Ashe on Sunday.
