White House Says Trump Will Donate $1M To Hurricane Aid

President Donald Trump officially submitted a request to Congress for an initial $7.85 billion in emergency funding for Harvey relief efforts in Texas and Louisiana late Friday night.

Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was the largest disaster the nation has faced, with recovery costs of $110 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat from Houston, was crafting legislation for $150 billion in emergency funding through almost two-dozen government agencies and departments.

FEMA pays for immediate shelter costs and can finance home fix costs of up to $33,000 or so, but other costs such as flood insurance payments, larger housing damage, and state, local, and government buildings promise a major price tag.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has said that his state may need more than $125 billion.

In a letter to U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said the request included $7.4 billion for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Disaster Relief Fund and $450 million for the Small Business Administration's disaster loan program.

Financial markets have been anxious about the possibility of the debt ceiling not being raised, which could cause a USA credit default and send economic shockwaves worldwide.

Trump used a similar "reporters decide" gimmick at the beginning of his administration, that time with his presidential salary, which he is declining to accept. Then-press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters at a March briefing that Trump "has kindly asked you all determine where that goes".

House GOP leaders have signaled they are aiming to act fast on Harvey aid and a vote is likely next week.

"Certainly not silly polls that, frankly, weren't much use to us in the election, and I don't think are now".

"We will be here every day until this city and this state and this region rebuild bigger and better than ever before", he said.

That left open the possibility that the aid package could be linked to a broad, short-term budget measure that must pass by October 1 to prevent a government shutdown.

But White House Advisor Kellyanne Conway tells us the president doesn't want a fight.
