Protests and Police Conflict Expected at THAAD Deployment

Russian Federation may be forced to take military measures to counterbalance the deployment of the US THAAD missile defense systems to South Korea and Japan, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Monday. A Thaad unit typically consists of six launchers, 48 interceptors, a fire control and communication unit and radar.

Russia, alongside China, also criticized the increase in South Korea's joint military activities with Washington as a danger to the peace and stability of the region.

Soon after Pyongyang launched another long-range missile July 28, South Korea President Moon Jae-in ordered the temporary deployment of additional THAAD launchers.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang expressed grave concerns over the planned additional installation as he urged South Korea and the USA to withdraw the THAAD system.

Meanwhile, North Korea shows no signs of ending its nuclear and ballistic missile tests, calling its recent nuclear test and other "self-defense" measures a "gift package" for the United States, warning that others are on the way if Washington continues its "reckless provocations".

They will be located at the US base in South Korea.

Trump is to speak Wednesday with China's president.

Many residents have expressed concerns that THAAD - which is created to shoot down short- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles - will cause environmental and health problems for locals, due to its emission of electromagnetic waves.

According to a statement from South Korea's presidential office, Moon and Trump agreed to remove the limit on the payload of South Korean missiles in response to the North's nuclear test.

The U.S. keeps threatening to use military options. There are now two THAAD launchers in operation at the Seongju base.

Geng urged South Korea and the USA to stop the deployment of THAAD, adding that its powerful radar could probe Chinese territory and therefore undermine the country's security.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for talks with North Korea, saying sanctions are not a solution. He said it "offers a genuine way to defuse the tensions and a step-by-step settlement".
