Tropical Storms Jose and Katia Threaten the Caribbean

As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, Tropical Storm Jose had maximum sustained wind of 70 miles per hour and may become a hurricane by the afternoon.

It is quite unusual to find three tropical systems churning in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico at the same time.

A cold front over Texas will keep Katia from pushing north, forcing the storm to hang around in the western Gulf before turning south and southwest and driving into eastern Mexico later this week.

The government of Mexico issued a hurricane watch for the coast from Tuxpan to Laguna Verde.

Katia was moving southeast at 3 miles per hour as of the 4 p.m. update. Katia is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 5 to 10 inches over northern Veracruz, and 2 to 5 inches over far southern Tamaulipas, northeast Puebla, and southern Veracruz through Saturday morning.

The storm is expected to bring a maximum 15 inches of rain to Veracruz.

The depression is forecast to strengthen into a tropical storm within the next day or so, and it will receive the name Katia.

Meanwhile, Jose is swirling in the Atlantic, located about 1,040 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. It was behind Hurricane Irma, which is a Category 5 storm, and in the Caribbean and headed toward Florida.
