US Open: Petra Kvitova on her return to tennis after knife attack

"It came down to the wire and I'm hoping we have more matches like that".

It was the most significant match since Kvitova's comeback from the horrendous hand injuries she suffered when she was stabbed by an intruder at her home last December.

There's no doubt that Venus misses Serena as much as she says at these major events.

All these have been struggling with injuries and various issues lately and seeing them thriving in NY enhances the special feeling US Open bears within its core.

Neither woman played with a ton of subtlety, mainly trading stinging groundstrokes from the baseline on exchanges that grew in intensity as the 2-hour, 34-minute encounter went along. At 37 years old, her slam results this season are as follows: Australian Open runner-up, French Open fourth round, Wimbledon runner-up, and now U.S. Open semifinals. She sprayed a second serve four feet long then failed in her effort to squeeze a forehand down the line, gifting back the break at 15. With her sister at home resting with a new baby, Venus is looking to keep the Williams name at the top of the tennis charts with a win on Thursday over a competitor thirteen years her junior, Sloane Stephens.

It's the first time since 2002 Williams has reached at least three major semifinals in a single season and it sets up a blockbuster all-American semifinal with Fed Cup teammate Sloane Stephens. This may finally prove to be her year, beating two seeded players and dispatching Vinci and Barty in straight sets. Even in Paris, she said she still "can't move them fully". But after Kvitova held serve to extend her lead to 3-1, Williams roared back, winning the next five games and elating the largely pro-Venus crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"I'm getting teary eyed, this is incredible", said Stephens, a semi-finalist at the Australian Open in 2013. "I would love to have that again - top four, top five playing in the semifinals".

"I'm so fortunate to have won that match". "He played during a time where he couldn't just focus on the tennis". She was a seven-time Grand Slam champion on the predictable, understandable wane.

She was one of four USA women in the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows, the most since five made it that far 15 years ago.

Against Williams, Kvitova worked the angles pretty well with her crafty left hand, but she lacked consistency and the American was never threatened in the final tiebreak.

"It has been a great two weeks for American tennis, seeing all the American players in the draw and all of them advancing so deep and competing so well", Williams said. Tomorrow, Coco Vandeweghe will take on Pliskova and Keys will face Kanepi to see whether the American dream can continue. Her absence from the tour was felt by everyone involved in tennis and it is fantastic to witness her return to some signs of the same level of tennis that she has always been capable of on a hard-court. And #Petra Kvitova's run is a special one as the two-time Wimbledon champion came back after being so close to having her career ended.

Venus Williams, her self, admitted this fact.

"I had a cast and a peg leg, and I think those were probably-that was my toughest time", she said.
