PM returns to New Delhi after completing China, Myanmar visit

India said Wednesday that it shares Myanmar's concerns over "extremist violence" in the Rakhine state from where 125,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging all stakeholders to find a solution that respects the country's unity.

Prime Minister Modi also lauded External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in helping people in distress, and being sensitive to the concerns of every Indian in any part of the world. Myanmar officials claim violence broke out after Rohingya insurgents attacked dozens of police posts and an army base.

■ The prime minister's visit to Myanmar comes amid a spike in ethnic violence against Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine state.

"People of India have the confidence that India can be transformed and we can break free from some of the evils that entered our system", he said. A total of 11 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) have been signed between the two governments that entail an array of subjects such as maritime security cooperation, press relations between the two countries and cooperation between the Election Commission and Union Election of Myanmar.

He is expected to raise the issue of the exodus of the ethnic Rohingyas into neighbouring countries.

India has also provided humanitarian relief following natural calamities like Cyclone Mora this year, Komen in 2015 and Nargis in 2008 and an quake in Shan state in 2010.

The meeting between Modi and Suu Kyi came on a day she was quoted as telling Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that global outrage over Myanmar's treatment of its Rohingya Muslims was being fuelled by "a huge iceberg of misinformation".

He appreciated India's Act East Policy and Neighbourhood First Policy, saying that these policies have helped tighten the friendship and expand the dialogue partnership between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

India has additionally promised the Burmese government of it's intention to open two Industrial Training Centers to aid developmental activity in Myanmar.

Emphasising Myanmar's value in India's freedom struggle, Prime Minister Modi said that this is the sacred land from where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose gave the slogan of "give me blood and I will give you freedom". When I am travelling, I make it a point to interact with the Indian diaspora, PM Modi said adding that the Indian diaspora has contributed to the development of wherever they have settled.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, later Tuesday, departed for Nay Pyi Taw for his three-day bilateral visit to Myanmar for forging close cooperation between the two countries on security and counter-terrorism. Later, the prime minister left for heritage city of Bagan where he visited the Ananda Temple and the Bagan viewing tower.

Modi arrived here on the second leg of his two-nation trip after he travelled to the southeastern Chinese city Xiamen where he attended the annual BRICS Summit.
