Bahamas narrowly escapes the worst of Hurricane Irma

The Washington Post added that on Saturday, the wind on Long Island in the Bahamas was blowing from southeast to northwest, and therefore, on the north west side of the shoreline, the water was getting blown away from the shoreline.

THIS was the freaky moment the devastating Hurricane Irma sucked water away from Caribbean beaches in a rare phenomenon. "As the storm draws water toward the centre, it gets pulled away from the surroundings".

Basically, in the case of Irma, the power and the pressure have combined in such a way that the "bulge" effect is sucking the Atlantic ocean into its vortex.

"I am in disbelief right now..." she wrote.

Meteorologists explain the incredible pressure from Hurricane Irma is pulling the water into the storm's center.

STORM-IRMA

Twitter user @Kaydi_K wrote in a tweet that included a video of a person strolling through what appears to be a shoreline that was once underneath several feet of water.

Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm which ripped through the Caribbean Islands on its way to Florida and has killed at least 24 people, left bare beaches along the coastline of the Bahamas.

The phenomenon, though rare, is not a sign of a tsunami, according to the Post. She also said the water will most likely return without any great force sometime Sunday afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center predicts a "life-threatening storm surge" will hit the islands of the Florida Keys on Sunday.

But not many people could predict what the storm did to the ocean surrounding a few small Bahamian islands.
